In a webinar held on 22nd September, Canada's immigration minister, Hon. Marco Mendicino spoke in length as to how Canada is committed towards attracting international students and how it will be affected by the current scenario.
In the live session, he was accompanied by high level expert panel and they discussed the impact and role of international education, benefits and associated opportunities. They also discussed about the disruption brought on due to pandemic, the overall outlook, and the challenges.
During the live session, he stated that, “I steadfastly believe that immigration will play a vital role in our economy, as it has in recent years.”
So far in 2020, the Immigration, Refugee, Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has already issued first stage approvals for 56,000 study permit applications.
These stage-wise approvals have taken place after the Canadian government announced a major policy reform.
This path-breaking, two-step study permit process enabled a lot of international students begin their Canadian study program while overseas amid Covid-19.
The stage-one approvals have been issued by the IRCC after thoroughly reviewing acceptance letters from DLIs, proof of fund documents and other key criteria.
The second-step, i.e. the final study permit approval will be marked as completed once the international students travel to Canada and get their medical examination, criminal background check, and biometrics done.
A lot of Canadian DLIs are indicating their interest in welcoming international students to their campuses during the Covid-19.
But, as a matter to fact, they are unable to do so because of the temporary travel restrictions. Due to these restrictions, a lot of international students are unable to travel to Canada.
Thus, to tackle the situation, both Federal Government and DLIs are working towards identifying how they can welcome international students to respective Canadian campuses amidst pandemic.
A team is also dedicated towards ensuring that each designated learning institution in Canada meets the public health requirements of their respective province and territory in order to ensure the health and safety of all the international as well as Canadian students.
Towards the end, Mendicino stressed on the fact that Canada is firm on its 2020–2021 Immigration Level Plan for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Both Federal and provincial governments are working towards meeting the goals of attracting more global talent required to create jobs and encourage innovation.
