As promised by the province’s new premier, Jason Kenney, two new programs are on the trail and are expected to welcome 40,000 new immigrants to rural communities by the year 2024.
Consultations are expected to start at the end of this year on 2 major immigration programs of Alberta with stakeholders, including employers, experts, settlement organizations and immigrants who are already living in the province.
As told in CIC news by spokesperson Gurshan Dhillon, "The immigration department of the province is currently working upon the design various options of the program."
Kenney has served as an immigration minister of Canada from the year 2008 to 2013 and had guaranteed to develop an exclusive Rural Entrepreneur Immigration Program (8,000) and Rural Renewal Program (32,000), if he gets elected. It was planned with an intention to utilize the power of immigration to strengthen the province s smaller communities by bringing entrepreneurs and skilled workers to rural communities of Alberta like Wood Buffalo and Brooks.
UCP is taking notes from the Morden’s Community Initiative developed by the Manitoba province which attracted and retained immigrants in the province s rural communities. More than 20% of all new immigrants in Manitoba settle in its rural communities like Morden, which in turn helped in overall population growth.
On this campaign trail, the Rural Renewal Program will be aligned to the Express Entry system, which is undoubtedly one of the principal sources of skilled foreign workers in Canada.
It manages a pool of candidates for 3 key economic-class programs:
Candidates are ranked on the basis of their score awarded on the following factors, age, education, proficiency in English or French, skilled work experience and those who have a provincial nomination.
Alberta too has its own Express Entry-aligned PNP stream, i.e. Alberta Express Entry, but it is not expected to be linked with the proposed Rural Renewal Program.
For Rural Entrepreneur Immigration Program, Kenney has again planned a campaign-trail and has promised to welcome 500 experienced entrepreneurs as well as their families as immigrants every year.
Among other eligibility criteria of the program, a prospective entrepreneur immigrant is also required to meet the minimum funds/investment along with net worth thresholds. Also, he/she must commit to manage and operate an active business in which they must have a minimum ownership percentage of 51.
