Category-Based Express Entry Draw for Transport occupations

Canadian government, on 18 September 2023 have confirmed the opening of the first ever Category-Based Express Entry Draw for the Transport Industry Professionals. The newly appointed Canadian Immigration Minister, Marc Miller announced the launch of the first-ever Express Entry invitation round this week, which will explicitly target the candidates with experience in the transport sector, including commercial truck drivers, pilots, and aircraft assembly workers. This category-based selection measure is expected to attract much-needed skilled talent to the industry.

Category-Based Selections have started recently by IRCC

On May 31, 2023, former Immigration Minister of Canada, Sean Fraser, introduced the ground-breaking concept of category-based selection within Canada's most popular economic immigration system, Express Entry. Such targeted invitation rounds allows Canada to issue Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to prospective permanent residents based on precise skills, training, or language proficiency. These amendments aim to address labour shortages and encourage economic goals by boosting individuals with relevant work experience or proficiency in the French language to pursue permanent residency.

Categories chosen for Category-based EE draws in 2023

This year, category-based selection invitations will target the candidates who have

  • a strong French language proficiency or
  • work experience in the following fields:
  • healthcare
  • science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  • trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
  • transport
  • agriculture and agri-food

Until date, the government of Canada have held the category-based Express Entry draws for most of the selected categories for the year 2023. The two remaining categories are as follows:

  • transport
  • agriculture and agri-food

Emphasizing on the category based selections in Express Entry System draws, Minister Miller said,

“As Canada grows its economy, we’re committed to improving transport and infrastructure to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods and passengers across the country. Category-based selection helps us invite newcomers with experience in transport occupations to fill significant labour gaps and ensure the future success of the Canadian transport sector. I look forward to welcoming more skilled workers to our country, as their knowledge and expertise are invaluable, to meet our labour market needs.”
